Workshop Report by Salamata Oumou Bah (Kyoto)

In response to the first edition held in Hong Kong last year, the second edition of the joint research postgraduate workshop in international law was held in the traditional city of Kyoto, from 18 to 19 March 2017, on the main campus of Kyoto University. Under the supervision of Professor Shotaro Hamamoto (Kyoto University), and Professor Gregory Gordon (Chinese University of Hong Kong), fourteen (14) presenters spoke during the two days to discuss different topics relating to international law, with a view to improving their respective research. Instead of the usual twenty minutes given to each presenter at the last edition, fifteen minutes were given to each one to present, five minutes for comments by a designated discussant and thirty minutes of discussion. The reduction of the speech time was necessary to increase the number of presenters due to the interest of researchers in taking part in the joint seminar initiated by our professors.

In fact, many aspect of International law, such as investment law, corporate law or human rights, were discussed during the two days. The participants came from different backgrounds with different specialties in research, raised a number of questions and comments and exchanged heated and constructive debates, which were, once again, very useful and instructive to everyone.

“Pour joindre l’utile à l’agréable”, a welcoming dinner and a farewell dinner were organized for the guests. Both dinners were held in traditional restaurants, the one in the neighborhood of Kyoto University and the other in the city centre, where traditional Japanese meal were served. In the afternoon of the second day, the guests from the CUHK, got the chance to witness a traditional wedding in the Yoshida Shrine, close to the University. Event very unusual to see, as some participants who are international students in Kyoto University, have never got such privilege although they spent over two years in Japan!!!
