Seminar Report by Nicolaas Buitendag (Kyoto)

The second Kyoto-Seoul Joint Student Seminar in International Law was held on 22-23 December 2015 with Kyoto as the hosts. The seminar saw postgraduate students from KU and SNU alternately engage in short presentations of their research followed by a commentator from the other university. This was followed by a floor discussion, to which most of the time was dedicated.

The first session commenced from the Centennial Hall of Kyoto University's iconic Clock Tower. It was an opportunity for older colleagues to reacquaint, and to meet new ones. After six well-researched presentations had been discussed, an informal dinner was enjoyed at Omura-ya izakaya, where more convivial topics could be discussed.

The second day's sessions ran equally smoothly, and the seminar was closed that evening at Kokora-ya. The seminar again made it apparent that to gain an outside perspective on one's research is always valuable. It is also interesting to hear of exciting research that one has previously been unaware of. The exchanges and relationships that come from events like this are truly enriching.

All the students are grateful to the supervising professors, Prof. Shotaro Hamamoto and Prof. Jaemin Lee, for taking the initiative for this event and Prof. Masahiko Asada and Prof. Keun-Gwan Lee for participating in our discussion. Special mention must also be made of the staff and students who undoubtedly worked hard to make the seminar run as smoothly as it did. It is with excitement that we look forward to meeting again in Seoul!
